Content

Disability-sensitive peacebuilding is about changing how conflict peacebuilders understand conflict, make decisions, design interventions, and produce knowledge. Disability-sensitive peacebuilding systematically examines how disability, barriers, power, exclusion, agency, and conflict interact and then uses that understanding to shape conflict analysis, strategy development, implementation, and learning.

This four weeks online training assesses current policy and practice in the peacebuilding sector and identifies weaknesses in regard to a disability-sensitive approach. Building on this initial assessment, we will develop criteria for improved practice throughout all key stages of the project management cycle. In each step, we will look at concrete ideas of how to make our own work more disability-sensitive and learn which tools and technologies can assist us. What would a disability-sensitive conflict analysis look like? Who needs to have his/her/their experiences
reflected in a disability-sensitive intervention design? What adaptations are needed for a disability-sensitive monitoring, evaluation, and learning system?

Objectives

By the end of the four week on-line course participants will…
• …be able to recognize disability as a power, participation, conflict, and peacebuilding issue, not
only a protection issue.
• …be able to identify how ordinary conflict-analysis processes may systematically exclude
certain knowledge and perspectives.
• …be able to adapt common conflict-analysis tools and questions.
• …translate disability-related findings into intervention analysis, better programming choices,
disability-aware budget allocations, partnerships with a purpose, safeguarding procedures, and
best-practice monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems.

Key Concepts

Throughout this four week on-line course we will…
• …develop a disability-sensitivity spectrum.
• …use a power critical and inter-sectional lens and draw on concepts around oppression and privilege.
• …adapt common conflict-analysis, project planning, and monitoring, evaluation, and learning tools and to make them more disability-sensitive.

Our guiding questions are: Whose experience, knowledge, and influence shapes conflict transformation and peacebuilding and how persons with disabilities can participate as diverse actors and decision-makers at eye-level.

Methodology

The course format combines the use of web-hosted material for self-study sessions and live sessions via Zoom. The training material on our learning platform combines texts for reading, audio/video material, and worksheets. During the live training sessions we will be using a mixture of input by an experienced facilitator, case studies and real-life experiences from around the world, peer sharing and comparative learning processes drawing on the wealth of knowledge and experiences from within the group, joint reflections, and practical tools and technologies.

Workload & Deliverables

• Active engagement with the key readings and other teaching material provided
• Active participation throughout the live sessions; i.e. in the plenary discussion, in break-out sessions, during assignments
• Willingness to leave the comfort zone, to question their own current practice as well as assumptions about social change processes, and to think outside the box.
• Keeping of a course diary for personal reflection and to relate new insights to respective work environments.
• Developing one concrete idea of how to make their own conflict transformation and peacebuilding work more disability-sensitive.

In addition to the live sessions, please earmark about three hours for preparation and discussions in your learning team.

After a successful participation, participants receive a certificate and become part of our alumni network.
Total expected weekly hours: 6 to 7 hours per week.
